Located at the very eastern edge of the Cape Winelands and along the picturesque Route 62, lies the quaint Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, where the almost 60 hectares of vineyards tended by the Nels of Boplaas are to be found. At first glance, this rugged semi-desert region may seem far from hospitable to the cultivation of vines. However, the rich ancient alluvial soils, marked day-night temperature differences and canal system to divert water from the Nels’ and Gamkaskloof dams, the vines, apricot and peach orchards flourish, creating an oasis of sorts.
